ACS: A red flag for heart attack
11/30/2010
You're out in the backyard raking leaves or just having coffee with a neighbor when the chest pain hits. Could it be a heart attack? Could it be something else - such as
Acute Coronary Syndrome
or ACS?
ACS is the term used for any condition brought on by sudden reduced blood flow to the heart. Many ACS symptoms are the same as heart attack symptoms, and if ACS isn't treated promptly, a heart attack may occur. That's why it's important to seek medical help immediately if you experience any of the following:
Chest pain, called angina, this discomfort may feel like pressure, burning or tightness.
Pain in other areas, especially the upper arm or jaw.
Nausea
Vomiting
Shortness of breath
Sudden, heavy sweating
Lightheadedness
If you have any of these common ACS symptoms, call your doctor, 911 or your local emergency services. Prompt treatment can help prevent serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke.
